Exploring Accra’s Coastal Gems: Labadi Beach vs. Laboma Beach

Labadi Beach, Ghana
Ghana’s capital city, Accra, boasts some of West Africa’s most stunning coastal areas, offering locals and tourists alike the chance to unwind, soak up the sun, and immerse themselves in the vibrant culture of the region. Among these coastal gems are Labadi Beach and Laboma Beach.
In this article, we will dive into these locations and highlight their unique charm and attractions.
Also known as La Pleasure Beach, Labadi Beach is situated in the La district of Accra, just a short drive from KCK Estates and the city center. It’s renowned for its lively atmosphere, with locals and tourists flocking to its shores to enjoy the golden sands and the inviting waters of the Gulf of Guinea. The beach is a popular spot for picnics, beach volleyball, and swimming.
One of the advantages of Labadi Beach is its proximity to various attractions and amenities. Visitors can explore the vibrant Labadi Township, known for its bustling markets and traditional Ghanaian eateries. Additionally, the beach is just a short distance from the Labadi Pleasure Beach Resort, where you can enjoy water sports, beachfront dining, and live entertainment.
Labadi Beach Side Treats & Attractions
Food lovers this is the spot for you! Labadi beachgoers are spoiled with an array of beachside restaurants and vendors offering delicious Ghanaian cuisine. Indulge in fresh seafood dishes, grilled kebabs, and tropical fruits while enjoying the ocean breeze. Tourists will even have the opportunity to try local specialties like jollof rice, fried plantains, and banku.
On my first trip to Ghana, Labadi Beach quickly became a fan fav of mine. There’s nothing better than the warm air blowing off of the waves and into your face, that, mixed with the smoky smell of local barbecue and a cold Club beer, chefs kiss! Don’t be surprised if you see small groups of kids here and there performing or putting on small acts. Work in Accra can be scarce for some locals, especially depending on their level of education. Many kids will perform for local tourists on the beach to help alleviate some financial strain at home or simply to have their pocket cash. I promise you your jaw will drop when you see what some of these young people are capable of.
On our last trip to Labadi while enjoying the company of the crashing waves a group of about 4 kids popped up right in front of us. In a rhythmic sequence, they all started to dance and vibe out to the music playing. As if it weren’t impressive enough that they came up with a complete 5-step routine on the spot, the next thing I knew there was a fire in the air. In one fell swoop these dancers turned into fire breathers and I could not have been more amazed…and fearful. They were a joy to watch and if you happened to come across a group of kids similar to them I always recommend dropping them some change if possible. Which brings me to my next point, tipping!
Tipping in Ghana
While tipping in America is fairly common, in Ghana this is not always the case. Be wary of individuals who may approach you on the beach offering to find you someplace to sit or eat. This could be someone who works at one of the local eateries trying to gain your business or just as easily this could be a random local looking to try and make a quick buck off of an unsuspecting tourist. Always try to go directly to the establishment to find your seating or make reservations.
Labadi Beach is a hub of activity, with something for everyone to enjoy. Join in a game of beach volleyball, take a leisurely horse ride along the shore, or simply relax and soak up the sun. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even try your hand at jet skiing, banana boating, or parasailing, offered by various vendors along the beach. Pro tip: don’t go crazy pre-booking excursions online beforehand. More often than not you will find a better deal the day of just by walking the shorelines and chatting with the local vendors.
Ghana Nighlife, Polo Beach Club
Ghana’s nightlife is a vibrant fusion of culture, music, and culinary delights, drawing both locals and tourists alike. One of the gems of the Ghanaian nightlife scene is the Polo Beach Club, nestled right on the serene shores of Labadi Beach. This 21-and-over scene is a relaxing chill vibe during the day where guests can get up close and personal with the shoreline and sip on some tasty cocktails.
As the sun sets the beach club transforms into a pulsating hub of energy, with Afrobeat music filling the air, and the sound of waves providing a soothing backdrop. The ambiance is unbeatable, with guests lounging on comfortable sofas, enjoying the cool ocean breeze and some tasty treats. Polo Beach Club offers a diverse menu, reflecting the rich culinary heritage of Ghana. From the freshest seafood caught straight from the ocean to sumptuous local delicacies, guests can indulge in an array of tantalizing flavors.
Signature dishes include Aioli Octopus, Spicy Goat, Jollof rice, Red Snapper, and more! The atmosphere is lively, with guests savoring their meals while soaking in the breathtaking views of the ocean under the starlit sky. Whether it’s a romantic dinner or a lively gathering with friends, Polo Beach Club is one of my top recommendations for an unforgettable nightlife experience in Ghana.
Laboma Beach Village
Located in Laboma Village, Laboma Beach offers a more tranquil and secluded experience compared to Labadi. Surrounded by picturesque palm trees and fishing boats, this beach provides a serene setting for relaxation and contemplation. It’s perfect for those seeking a quieter escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.
While Laboma Beach may not have as many commercial attractions nearby, it offers the opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture. Take a stroll through the Laboma village to witness daily life in a Ghanaian fishing community and interact with friendly locals.
Keeping on trend with its lowkey vibe the amount of dining options is fewer than those offered at Labadi. However, that does not mean that this location lacks in the authentic Ghanaian flavor that you will soon come to crave. Enjoy endless options of small eateries and food stalls dotting the beach, sample freshly caught fish prepared in traditional styles, and try local staples like fufu and grilled tilapia. If you’re looking for something a little more on the “boujee” side consider arranging a beachside barbecue with freshly caught seafood and local ingredients. I promise you won’t be disappointed!
While Laboma Beach is quieter in terms of organized activities, there are still plenty of ways to enjoy your time here. Take a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear waters, or rent a kayak and explore the coastline at your own pace. You can also embark on a fishing excursion with local fishermen and experience the traditional methods used to catch fish in the area.
Whether it’s Labadi or Laboma you choose for your beach day (or both) just trust that they both offer their own distinct charms and attractions, catering to different preferences and interests. Whether you’re seeking a lively beach experience with abundant amenities or a peaceful retreat immersed in nature and local culture, you’ll find it in Accra’s coastal treasures.
